Dyeing your beard is not always a straightforward process, especially if you’ve never done it before. In fact, even if you’ve done it a couple of times, it’s still possible to make mistakes. When done improperly, your beard can drip and leave unsightly marks on your skin that are difficult to remove.

If you’ve spent all this time and effort in grooming and shaping your beard, then you wouldn’t want to ruin your look with haphazard coloring. Before you begin, however, you must remember that you need to have a full beard for the dye to work, or the color can drip and stain your skin instead!

Once you have a proper beard, make sure to use natural hair dyes, such as the one we offer here at EarthDye. Our products are 100% chemical-free, hypoallergenic, come exclusively from vegan materials, and are cruelty-free.

To help you do it properly, here are five helpful tips to follow when dyeing your beard:

  • Prepare your tools and wear dark-colored clothes

You don’t want to be running around while waiting for your beard to dry. As such, it’s best to have all your tools ready and on-hand before attempting to color your beard.

Brush applicators work best, but you can also use a small spoon for your goatee in a pinch. Aside from that, it’s also a good idea to wear old black clothes that won’t be as easy to stain as light-colored ones. You will also need a dark towel that you will only use when applying dye to your beard to ensure that nothing else gets stained in the process.

For best results, use a hair dye application kit

  • Prepare the dye according to packet instructions

All packets come with instructions, so it’s essential to read those before mixing your dye.

In general, it’s best to use warm water and mix the dye on a plate-like container. Try to mix just enough coloring for your beard to prevent excessive wastage. Depending on the length of your beard, the contents of your packet can contain enough dye for as much as 10 to 20 uses. If you’re only working with a goatee, the pack can last you for up to 50 applications.

  • Apply the dye with an applicator brush

Once you’re done mixing the dye, dip the tip of the applicator brush on your dye mixture. As a beginner, it can be tempting to put too much dye or too little. Try to put it somewhere in the middle and apply it on your beard in a careful but steady up and down motion.

Brush the dye deep into your beard and make sure to cover every visible patch. Depending on the dye color, it will be easy to tell if your whole beard has been coated. Remember that the dye will stain any surface that it touches, so be careful to prevent the dye from dripping or sticking on your skin.

  • Wait patiently for the results

Once again, your packet instructions are your best friend when it comes to knowing how long you should wait for the dye to do its work. Some dyes get lighter as they dry, making it necessary for you to test the color and apply more dye if it’s not to your liking.

In the case of EarthDye products, our dyes can get darker over time, so there’s generally no need to apply more! However, your beard hair’s natural color will affect how the final color will turn out, so it’s best to test the color all the same.

  • Wash with lukewarm water

After the allotted time has passed,  rinse the excess dye off your beard with lukewarm water. Do this until the water is clear and pat it dry with paper towels.

After 12 to 24 hours, wash your hair with shampoo. It’s practically impossible to know how your specific shampoo will react with dyes. For best results in using EarthDye natural hair dyes, we recommend using Harvest Moon Extra Conditioning Henna Shampoo or the Harvest Moon Aloe Vera Shampoo.

Conclusion

For best results, it’s best to use natural hair dyes that people you know already trust. After all, some dye products contain harmful chemicals that will react poorly with your skin, while others can cause allergic reactions. To avoid such nuisances, look for products such as EarthDye, which are 100% organic and cruelty-free!
